Hello from Boulder, Colorado

My name is Haven Iverson, and I am a full-time book editor, book coach, ghostwriter, and children’s book author.

At wordhaven, I help people develop their written voice so it is true to who they are and craft their best possible book. I left my long-time job in publishing because I wanted to go much deeper into the books I work on than traditional publishing allows. As an editor at a publishing house, I acquired, edited, and managed an enormous number of books at a time. My time in publishing was exciting, always full-tilt, and I felt incredibly devoted to the books I worked on, but I yearned to slow down the process and partner with authors in a deeper way to help them develop their best book possible. Traditional publishing gave me a ton of insider knowledge about the market, the industry, and how both agents and editorial teams will evaluate your manuscript. Now, as a freelance editor and writer, I bring that knowledge with me in order to give your book the time it deserves so that it is polished, compelling, and memorable for editors, agents, and audiences alike.

When we first meet, I will get to know you—your voice and your story beyond the book. I believe the connection and trust between author and editor are key to getting your best book out onto the page. I tailor the process of how we work together to your best working style. There are a number of ways to get the best book draft out of a writer. I’ll work with you to find yours.  The collaboration between editor and author can be a tremendously creative and magical endeavor—and I look forward to working with you to bring your book—one that will excite audiences—to life.

I'd love to hear about your book project.

my professional journey

I am the former Editorial Director of Sounds True, where I edited close to 100 books. With over two decades of traditional trade publishing experience, I have edited and collaborated on books by a number of New York Times bestselling authors, including Pema Chodron, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Clarissa Pinkola Estes, William Ury, Jack Kornfield, and Mark Nepo, and more. As an editor and writer, I specialize in nonfiction books in the categories of self-development, psychology, parenting, business, creativity, health and wellness, leadership, and spirituality. I am also a children’s picture book editor (and author!).

Prior to my career in book publishing, I spent a few years leading backpacking and climbing trips for outdoor organizations, including NOLS (the National Outdoor Leadership School). I graduated with my MFA in fiction as a fellow at The James A. Michener Center for Writers at University of Texas, Austin, where I studied with poet Naomi Shihab Nye and fiction writers Joy Williams and the late Denis Johnson. I have a BA in Neuroscience, and a minor in Women’s Studies, from Colorado College.

outside of work

In my spare time, I like to spend as many hours outside as possible, no matter the weather or season. In 2010 I started a meditation practice which I dropped completely in 2013 in favor of taking long silent hikes and reading a book a week. These two activities remain my meditation practice today.

I love backpacking, hut-to-hut skiing, quilting, reading the Sunday NYT, Basset Hounds, podcasts, public radio, and baking with my sourdough starter, Flo. My camping tent is my second home. I am most happy when cuddled up in said tent with my husband, 2 children, and 3 dogs during a summer thunderstorm.

Short of going camping together, the best way to get to know me is probably through the books and authors I love.
